Population structure and ongoing microevolution of the emerging multidrug-resistant Salmonella Typhimurium ST213

  10 April 2024

The study examines the diversity and evolution of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium ST213, an emergent multidrug-resistant strain linked to food chain and gastrointestinal infections in North America. The North American isolates (NA-ST213) exhibit distinct multidrug resistance profiles and unique phage and CRISPR spacer patterns. The study highlights the importance of studying this emerging S. Typhimurium sequence type, but warns of potential health risks, especially when closely related to pandemic sequence types.
